Adam Weissman is working to create a world where human beings reaffirm a sense of reverence for the earth and a kinship with and compassion for sentient living beings, including each other. An anarcho-primitiivist, Adam is part of a rapidly growing movement that looks to abolish government and private property and to develop a post-industrial, post-capitalist society, post-agricultural looking to precivilized peoples as a model for an egalitarian, fulfilling existence in harmony with the earth.
For over a decade, Adam has worked both on a wide variety of activist projects on issues like animal rights, sweatshop labor, war and militarism, environmental justice for indigenous peoples, corporate globalization, wilderness defense, the struggle to liberate Burma from military dictatorship, youth liberation, global warming, genetic engineering, expanding the voices of women and people of color in social change movements, and overconsumption.
Adam is a collective member and longtime activist with the Activism Center at Wetlands Preserve http://wetlands-preserve.org , a 15 year old human, animal, and earth liberration activist group. Current projects include efforts to convert the comic book industry to use of recycled paper http://wetlands-preserve.org/?page=ComicsCampaign), developing an anti-fur website for NYC activism http://furfreenyc.org, and promoting the freegan lifestyle and ethic through "dumpster tours," media interviews, and the website http://freegan.info. Currently, Adam was one of the primary organizers of the Grassroots Animal Rights Conference in April 2005 http://grassrootsar.org and works with the NYC People's Referendum on Free Trade http://ftaareferendum.org).
Adam lives in Hackensack, NJ, has worked as a security guard and in a variety of capacities for nonprofit organizations including The Activism Center at Wetlands Preserve and the Rainforest Action Network. Adam is not college educated, believing that ideas should disseminate freely throughout society, rather than being locked away in elite academic institutions that are becoming increasingly unavailable to the working class and people of color amidst tuition hikes and attacks on affirmative action. Strongly committed to living a lifestyle that is reflective of his values, he is a freegan and a nondriver.
THE WAR MUST END.
For 70,000 years human beings have waged a war of conquest against the earth, other living beings, and each other.
An ideology of mastery and domination has led to the growth of a civilization rooted in an ideology of severing interconnectedness and dominating the created "other." -- men over women, humans over animals and the Earth, whites over people of color, Christians over nonbelievers, straights over queers...
Far from bringing us happiness and satisfaction, humans are experiencing a profound sense of loss-- separation anxiety from the natural world, made worse by the breakdown of human community in the age of mass media.
In the drive to be whole, humans further destroy-- in the quest for wealth, in the drive to acquire more commodities, and in the false sense of community and purpose provided by nationalism, war, and other chauvenistic ideologies.
We live in an age of catastrophe of our own making
o where factory trawlers empty the seas of life,
o where rainforests are razed to create beef pasture,
o where millions starve to death as countless tons of food are wasted;
o where ideologies of hatred and domination force people of color to live in fear of the racist agents of law enforcement agencies charterd to serve and protect.
o where caricatures of indigenous nations adorm football hemets and baseball caps, while real indigenous peoples are wiped out in silence by oil, coal, gas, and and timber companies and complicit governments.
o where doomed, mutilated animals are crammed together in massive factory farms that putrefy air and poison water
o where liars called leaders send children to wars with myths, gods, flags, and deceptions.
